Historical Overview

Street art in Hermosa Beach has evolved significantly since its early influences. Initially, it mirrored the urban art movements of the late 20th century, catering to a community eager for artistic expression.

The local government and artists began collaborating in the early 2000s, leading to a more organized approach to murals. This partnership championed public art projects that showcased local talent while beautifying the area.

Today, iconic murals adorn the streets, telling stories of the community’s rich jazz town history, beach appreciation, and diverse culture. These artworks often reflect themes related to the beach lifestyle, community, Los Angeles spirit, and environmental conservatism resonating with residents and visitors alike.

The street art that pops up in the city serves as conversation starters, bridging gaps between different demographics and you may notice that the more you see the artworks throughout the city streets. Initiatives to involve schools and local groups in art projects promote inclusivity and encourage creativity among youth.

As a mother, I love to volunteer for the art programs and I believe in the value of art and the impact that these public art pieces have for the youth, locals, and those visiting Hermosa…that they see messages of kindness, history, and the atmosphere that makes Hermosa…Hermosa.

The murals not only beautify the landscape but it’s apparent to me, Hermosa has lots of local love and the murals just show that sense of community and culture that makes “Hermosians” have those feel good vibes and come together.
