raining on ground

Just because the sun takes a break doesn’t mean your plans have to! Whether you’re a local or visiting, there are plenty of fun things to do in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and nearby areas when the rain starts falling. From cozy cafes to unique indoor experiences, here’s your ultimate guide to making the most of a rainy day.

raining on ground

I actually wrote this article…while it was raining! We finally have some rain (currently February) and it’s cold outside. My boots are on and I’m “freezing”…but the day must go on! Plus, the kids have to go to school.

So, as a Californian, I understand the feeling to stay indoors once the rain starts falling and skies turn gloomy. So many of us tend to be “scared of the rain” as some may say! However, no need to.

Especially with kids, I try to let them see that no matter the weather, we can always find something fun to do! Here’s a few on my list that anyone can enjoy, despite wet weather…

Visit a Cozy Coffee Shop

Rainy days are the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea. What’s nice, is so many coffee shops offer cozy seats, internet, and sweet greetings to make them worth a visit. Some of the best spots include:

  • Java Man Coffee House (Hermosa Beach) – A charming local spot with vintage vibes and delicious pastries. There is indoor seating, internet, and the vibe is very “living room”. It’s chill and relaxed with reasonable prices.
  • Pure Bean (Hermosa Beach) – This is tucked away in the center at the corner of PCH and Artesia. The cafe is new, modern, with wood accents and sleek furnishing. Chia seed pudding and super flaky butter croissants go perfect with the high-end, exceptional coffee, espresso, and oat milk lattes. The vanilla flavor is delicious here!
  • Lazy Acres (Hermosa Beach) – This is a two in one bonus spot! Shop organic and gourmet groceries, grab a famous “the cookie” that is gooey with chocolate and walnuts, and enjoy the selection of coffee drinks or smoothies they offer. There is plenty of seating to eat, sip, and relax.
  • Un Caffe Altamura (Manhattan Beach) – A cozy, sit down spot in Downtown Manhattan Beach with a European feel, offering fantastic espresso, baked goods, and breakfast.
  • Bluestone Cafe (Manhattan Beach) – This Aussie cafe offers full breakfast and some of the best coffee on the block. When I was in Australia, the coffee did not disappoint…so this spot is really lovely and is totally committed to offering solid coffee, just as a proper Aussie would!

Explore the Manhattan Beach Art Center

If you love art, this local gem offers free exhibits featuring contemporary and local artists. It’s small, quiet, and quaint…but a great place to get inspired while staying dry. You can call ahead to see if they have art shows and events coming up.

Open 10am-9pm (W-Sun) 1560 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

Get Your Self Care Done

Rainy weather is the perfect excuse for self-care. Check out:

  • Sand Spa (Hermosa Beach) – Get your nails done or a massage.
  • Massage envy (Manhattan Beach) – A relaxing spot for a more affordable massage or facial. It’s right by Bristol Farms so you can get a pressed juice or snack after to continue your outing indoors. (I love that grocery…so many yummy choices.)

Enjoy a Wine or Craft Beer Tasting

  • Barsha Wine & Spirits (Manhattan Beach) – A cozy wine bar with an extensive selection of wines and small plates.
  • Culture Brewing Co (Manhattan Beach) – A cool, laid back beer spot for flights and pints. No food here, but you can order and have it delivered. Check their website for when they have live music.
  • Hermosa Brewing Company (Hermosa Beach) – A great spot to try locally brewed craft beer. It’s right by the beach…so although it’s raining, you’re still in the beach vibe energy zone.
  • Uncorked Wine Shop (Hermosa Beach) – Perfect for wine lovers looking to enjoy a tasting in a relaxed setting.

Take a Yoga or Fitness Class

Stay active indoors with a yoga or workout session:

  • SoHo Yoga (Hermosa Beach) – A welcoming yoga studio offering heated and non-heated classes. It’s across from Starbucks so you can stay warm with a cup of tea or latte afterwards.
  • SoulCycle (El Segundo) – An energizing indoor cycling experience that will leave you feeling great. This is at the Point which is right on Rosecrans and PCH so people say Manhattan Beach…while technically it’s El Segundo. (SoulCycle 850 CA-1, El Segundo, CA 90245)

Have a Fun Indoor Brunch

  • The Arthur J (Manhattan Beach) – A cozy yet upscale spot with delicious comfort food.
  • Martha’s 22nd Street Grill (Hermosa Beach) – A local favorite known for its hearty breakfasts and laid-back atmosphere.

Not too Far Spots

While there is enough to do in Hermosa to Manhattan Beach on a rain day, it’s not far if you want to switch up your day with something new.

Go Bowling at Bowlero Torrance

A short drive from Hermosa and Manhattan Beach, Bowlero offers a fun bowling experience with neon lights, arcade games, and great food.

Try Indoor Rock Climbing at Sender One

Located just a short drive away in Los Angeles, Sender One offers a fun and active way to spend a rainy day. With climbing walls for all skill levels, it’s a great spot for families and fitness enthusiasts. It’s located by LAX, but if you take Sepulveda or a short freeway drive, you’re there in twenty minutes.

Enjoy the Rainy Days!

A little rain doesn’t have to ruin your plans. Whether you want to relax with a coffee, enjoy a cultural experience, or get active indoors, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and nearby areas have plenty of options to keep you entertained.
